Trying out nail art foils & how to do it!
Hello everyone, happy Sunday :) hope you are all enjoying your weekend! Finally looks like the snow is going now, yay, don't get me wrong is was nice to have it and looks pretty but then it just gets annoying as it kinda gets in the way, haha! I would of preferred it at Christmas ta, but anyways hopefully Spring is on it's way now.
I have been trying out nail art foils quite a bit lately and thought I would let you all know how to do it and that it is fairly easy to do, once you get the hang of it. I had seen nail art foils quite a lot everywhere and was very intrigued to try it out, as it looked really cool & effective on the nails. After coming across the website Charlies nail art last year, & seeing how cheap all the nail art supplies were, as they had some nail foils for only 39p for a sheet, I thought why not get some and give it a try. Now it did sit around in my order for a while before I attempted it as I thought it was going to be a lot harder than I thought to do, so kind of put it off for a bit. But then last week I decided to give it a go and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and quick it was to do, and loved how it turned out.
This was the first nail foil attempt I did, I chose to do the gold foil over a grey polish and love how it turned out! Grey polish is Nails inc 'Gloucester Crescent'. |
By now, if you haven't heard about nail foils, your probably wondering what I am going on about, haha! It's quite simply just a sheet of some sort of design on foil, and it applies to nail polish by just rubbing it on the nail, if like me your probably thinking what? no way will it just work by rubbing the foil, how? Surely it will just pull the nail polish off ( trust me your partly right if not dried enough ) , how does this work? As I thought exactly the same when I first got it and had no idea what I was doing, and so was pretty shocked and mesmerized when it actually did work. 😌
So today, I wanted to attempt doing it again, as I wanted to see how the foil looked over iridescent colours, as I thought it would give a nice effect over it and again happy with how it turned out today. Now I did find it a bit harder to do over iridescent colours, not to sure why as over a normal colour it was fairly easy but I think with the iridescent colours, they take a bit longer to dry because of the texture & with them being a little bit thicker in formula, so if you do it too quickly it smudges the polish.
Products used in today's look- Ciate's nail polishes 'Moonlit Whispers' & 'Moondust' with the gold nail foil sheet from Charlie's nail art. |
How it is done, as I mentioned before it is fairly simple to do but make sure you read my tips below to make sure it all goes to plan, but it is simply done by:
1. Painting a base coat as usual first, then painting chosen nail polish color/ colours, doing just the one coat of the colour at first.
2. Then go back in and paint the 2nd coat but only do this on 2-3 nails at a time and wait for the polish to almost dry but still be slightly sticky to touch. This is the part that is hard to judge but if you make a mistake then just re-paint and start again. That's the fun of it.
3. Starting with the 1st nail you painted with the 2nd coat, place nail foil on top of the nail polish with the design facing upwards and rub very lightly across the top of the foil.
4. Then watch the magic happen and be amused at the design transferring to the polish. I still don't get how it does it but it's pretty cool to watch. Continue applying the foil to the other nails and paint the 2nd coat onto the other nails and so on.
5.Then seal it all in with a top coat, and there you have some pretty cool foil nails.
The photos for the foils were rather hard to take as they don't really show the true shimmer of the gold foil and the polish but hope you can kind of see what they are like! |
A few tips for doing nail foils,
- Make sure to cut up the foil into little squares to fit the nails before starting.
- I would probably recommend testing this out first on a nail or two, before going straight in and doing all the nails, so you can see how it works etc.
- It's quite hard to judge but make sure you give the right amount of drying time before rubbing the foil on the nail to avoid smudging the polish, on your first few goes you may find that you mis-judge it and go and place the foil on before the polish is dry and pull the polish off, but that's o'k as it happens to the best of us, hehe! Practice makes perfect aye!
- I found doing the 2nd coat on a few nails at a time best, as otherwise if you paint the 2nd coat on all the nails at once, the last few may be dried before you get to them, resulting in the foil possibly not sticking to the polish.
- Bascially the key is to just find the perfect tackiness of the nail polish to avoid any of the above, to get the perfect base for the nail foil to apply too and have perfect looking nails, haha! But once you get there and know it's so fun watching it transfer.
- Know the polish your using, so you know the rough amount of time it dries in and don't use a polish that is too thick in consistency.
I really love the look of nail foils and how without having to really do much you can create a really different design, if you don't want just a colour. I also love with the foils that you can get different foils so can create a vary of looks if you feel like jazzing the nails up a bit. It's also just something really fun and easy to do for everyone, who wants to achieve a nail design but maybe not so good at nail art or doesn't have time to sit and do some complicated nail art.
Which was your favourite one I did, over normal nail polish or over the iridescent colours? Let me know in the comments and let me know if you give the nail foils a go.

DeleteOh wow I didn't realise you could use foils with regular polish. I used to be a nail tech and I would use nail foils quite often, but it was always with gel polish. Great post hun xx
DeleteThank you Graceful Glamour for leaving a lovely comment and stopping by to read my post :) thank you so much, I hope you found it useful! I have used them a couple of times with normal polish and it can be done but can be quite frustrating if you don't time it right as the polish can smudge haha but i guess it's just trail & error really but would probably work better over gels though, hehe! :) take care, Chantelle xx
